Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) biostimulator is an aesthetic injectable used to stimulate collagen production and restore facial volume lost due to ageing or certain medical conditions. Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is a biocompatible synthetic substance that gradually improves skin thickness and smoothness. Unlike fillers that provide immediate results, this biostimulator works over time, with effects becoming noticeable after a few months and lasting up to two years or more with proper treatment. It is commonly used to treat deep facial wrinkles, folds, and hollow areas.
It originated in France. It was first approved for use in Europe in 1999 for treating facial lipoatrophy (loss of fat beneath the skin), particularly in patients with HIV. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved it in 2004 for the same purpose, and it has since gained broader approval for cosmetic use to reduce facial wrinkles and folds.
